  Hello everyone, We are expecting to open August 22, 1 to 4 pm. Our exhibition begins with pre-contact and focuses on the homebirth movement in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the 1970s. It is a story about women's work birthing babies, and how a few, passionate humanists influenced the hospitals to be kinder and gentler to birthing mothers. It is also the story of the legalization of midwifery that resulted from the home birth movement. The power of the few to make the world a better place. We have vetted every piece of information. Our exhibition will be housed for researchers at the UCSF archives after we close January 2022. Our hours are Thursday 1 to 4pm, Friday 4 to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 pm

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION RESOLUTION from the American College of Nurse-Midwives

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is committed to creating a future that prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion and supports the continuing process to become an anti-racist organization. Speaking the truth on our history and the harm caused by it through ACNM’s denial, gaslighting, censorship, and exclusion, is the first step in long overdue restorative measures for our community of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), allowing us to promote inclusion, belonging, and a safe space for all midwives.   Women worked together Early women settlers came together to quilt, cook and catch babies. Migrating from many countries and cultures, they introduced a variety of traditions in the birthing room.   In Santa Cruz a few physicians who attended births in homes introduced the use of forceps, pain medications, and surgical procedures during the birthing process.   When Santa Cruz settler, Georgina Kirby had her baby in 1853, she used a new pain control gas called chloroform.
